Round-up of news and treats and other interesting things

South London based site-specific theatre company Baseless Fabric are presenting David Mamet’s rarely performed short plays Reunion and Dark Pony in libraries across South London as part of National Libraries Week 2017. The plays are two of David Mamet’s earliest work, first produced in the US in 1976 and 1977 respectively and both feature David Schaal and Siu-see Hung in their casts.

Both of the plays explore father and daughter relationships and the audience will be immersed in the worlds of these plays in the unique and atmospheric library environments during National Libraries Week 2017 to raise awareness of exciting events happening in local libraries and bring theatre to people in their local library space. Artistic Director Joanna Turner directs with Set & Costume Designer Bex Kemp, creating a site-responsive design in each library space.

Testing my all-too-fragile resolve to protest the Hampstead's predilection for the XY, the cast has been announced for the world premiere of Nicholas Wright's adaptation of Patrick Hamilton's The Slaves of Solitude.

Directed by Jonathan Kent, the show will see Fenella Woolgar (Welcome Home, Captain Fox!, Handbagged) star in the lead role of Miss Roach, a wartime heroine forced to flee London and begin a romantic tryst in a countryside boarding house. Clowns favourite Lucy Cohu is also in the cast - I'm helpless!

She is joined by Daon Broni, Clive Francis, Tom Milligan, Éimear O'Neill, Susan Porrett, Richard Tate, Gwen Taylor and Amanda Walker in the production.

The show features design from Tim Hatley with lighting by Peter Mumford and sound by Paul Groothuis. The Slaves of Solitude runs from 30 October to 25 November.

West End leading lady Madalena Alberto will perform in the new concert series Pizza Express Live! in Holborn on Sunday 3rd December 2017, 8pm.

It's the last opportunity to see Madalena Alberto in such an intimate space this year. After her sold out solo concert at Live at Zedel, Madalena will bring her musical director Miquel Tejada from Barcelona again, plus special guest musicians and performers, to create an eclectic musical evening at the brand new music venue in Holborn: Pizza Express Live!

In her solo concerts Madalena Alberto performs some of the musical theatre songs that have marked her career so far, as well as some of her favourite pieces, including songs written by herself, offering an unique repertoire which is of interest of all kind of audiences.

Madalena is mostly known for playing many coveted female roles in the West End, such as Fantine from Les Miserábles, the title role in Evita and Grizabella in Cats. She has also developed a following as a songwriter and recently released her latest single "Trains Tracks".

Regarding this concert Madalena Alberto says:
"I always enjoy immensely performing in intimate spaces such as this one. It's an opportunity to bring friends together on stage and share some of my favourite songs and artists, as well as experimenting with new material. And they have vegan pizza as well!"

The cast for James Fritz's Parliament Square, with the aceballs Jude Christian making her Royal Exchange (and Bush Theatre) directorial debut has also been revealed.

Appearing in this Royal Exchange Theatre and Bush Theatre co-production is Esther Smith (BBC3’s CUCKOO and UNCLE) who takes the lead role of Kat, who watches as ‘the world gets worse’ and finds herself compelled to take action - the play deftly asks where the line falls between complete commitment and dangerous obsession.

The cast is completed by Damola Adelaja, Seraphina Beh, Lois Chimimba, Kelly Hotten, Joanne Howarth and Jamie Zubairi.
